RFID Blocking

Definition
RFID blocking is a security feature designed to prevent radio-frequency identification (RFID) readers from accessing data stored on RFID-enabled items, such as contactless credit cards, passports, and ID badges. It typically involves materials that block electromagnetic signals.

Why it matters
RFID-enabled cards can be read from short distances without contact, which makes them vulnerable to unauthorized scanning or “skimming.” RFID blocking helps protect sensitive personal and financial information from theft and fraud.

Example use case
A person carrying a contactless credit card places it in a wallet with built-in RFID blocking material to ensure that no nearby device can read or clone the card’s data.
